ILLNESS OR WELLNESS

The birds were chirping and the sky had begun to blush, as the morning sun was just beginning to appear. The trees around the house stood still, eagerly awaiting to bathe in the first rays of the sun. The house was silent as all were fast asleep. As I rolled my yoga mat and gently wiped the beads of sweat from my forehead, feeling absolutely refreshed and rejuvenated, youthful and vibrant, I could not help thinking about my journey, from where to where, I had travelled in life. Though I was very active in my childhood, playing all kinds of games with my sisters and neighborhood friends, climbing trees, cycling around on the streets for hours, yet, as I grew into an adult, everything took a backseat. I was busy meeting up with friends and socializing, that there was no other physical activity. In course of time I realized that I had inherited the family genes, as I became diabetic. That’s when I realized that health is wealth. That’s how exercise became a part of my daily routine.

For the past seventeen years I have been consistently trying to control my diabetes through my food and daily exercise. I choose exercise over sleep. I no more eat tongue conscious food, but health conscious food. Exercise, meditation and right food are never compromised in my daily routine. The termite works slowly, unnoticed, inside the wall. We take notice of it only when it weakens the structure or after much damage has been done. Similar is the case when it comes to our health. We do not value our health when everything is going fine. Only when our health deteriorates, we begin to take notice. Sometimes it becomes too late Our body needs to be cared, it needs to be maintained.

There is so much to lose when we lose our health. We lose the quality of our life.  Many of us do not take our health seriously. Good health is the best gift we can give ourselves. What freedom it is to move around without even feeling the body! We cannot cure the disease after its onset, we can only maintain our body. If you are gifted with a healthy body, preserve it by taking care of it. Introduce your child to the right lifestyle from childhood, as everything is a matter of habit, including exercise and the food we eat. Habits either create you or destroy you. The life we live is purely our choice. What do you seek, Illness or wellness?
